About Moctec History

In Loving Memory of Victor H. Vazquez Sr. – Founder

Victor Vazquez was born of Mexican parents and raised on corn tortillas. Today, he makes his tortillas the old-fashioned way — the corn is wet milled on lava stones in our facility. This produces the masa dough which is then baked into tortillas.

Moctec was the inspiration of Victor H. Vazquez, a research psychologist who had worked in Civil Rights, and came to Washington, D.C. to direct a major research project being funded by the Department of Health and Human Services. After five years of government service during which time he had become the Director of a research and policy planning office in the Office of the Secretary/Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, he resigned his position to pursue the American Dream.

After 10 years of Government service, including military, civil rights and human services, Mr. Vazquez started Moctec in 1977 with one major goal in mind, to produce fresh, high-quality tortilla products. The process begins with whole kernel corn which is then cooked, steeped, washed, and then wet milled to produce a dough, called masa, from which the corn tortillas, tortillas chips, taco shells and other Mexican’s tortillas products are made.

By producing tortillas at night, Mr. Vazque was able to deliver fresh-made corn tortillas to area restaurants the next morning – a tradition that continues to this day.

Moctec Enterprises, Inc. specializes in the manufacturing and distribution of corn tortillas and is now one of Washington D.C. area’s largest suppliers of tortillas, chips, and other Mexican Products to the retail and foodservice industry. Moctec/Abuelita is listed as a Virginia’s Finest company.

Moctec’s tortillas products are made fresh daily without preservatives or other additives or trans-fat. All natural and bright taste is their hallmark. Corn tortillas are made from stone ground corn cooked right on the premises just as they do in the mountains of Mexico. They use yellow and white corn and make several sizes of tortillas. Flour tortillas are hand stretched and pressed by talented artisans to the proper thickness and size, then baked to a perfect consistency.
